MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN - Mark Gates

The Captain’s and President’s Presentation Evening

‘I have decided that it would be appropriate to postpone the presentation evening due to take place this Saturday.  I hope to re-schedule in about 5-6 weeks probably 25 Jul but tbc.

My reasons for this include the hope that the President Bryon Tarrant will be out of hospital in time to make his own presentations for President’s Day.  He has had his operation and is on the mend. During the Captain’s Weekend he called me twice to ask how it was going.

In addition, I feel that other events including the World Cup Football will deter some members from attending two nights in a row.

As many of you know we are also in the process of refurbishing the Bar area with new Carpets and a new Trophy Cabinet.  It would be therefore be better to hold the event when these changes have been made.

Anyone who has bought tickets can obtain a refund from the bar or simply keep them until the postponed date.

I apologise for this late alteration to our plans but it has been done in the hope of providing a more enjoyable evening for all members in the near future.’ MG

Recent Match Results
The Daily Mail Competition.  Unfortunately we lost in the latest round of the Daily    Mail Comp away to Stoneham by a very narrow score line of 3.2.  The course was in perfect condition and the weather was also perfect for golf; however the Andover team found it hard to get to grips with the greens with 3 putts popping up all too often.

Home advantage once again proved hard to overcome, the match was played in good spirit, with hospitality provided in the shape of sandwiches and chips.

Thanks to all the players who played in this competition, and sorry to Simon Jackson alias (Toby) and Mickey Batchelor who had to miss out in this tie due to holidays.

Alton. We managed to beat Alton again in a club match this time at home three and a half to one and a half. So a well done to the lads as we have a great record so far this year!

Private Parties – a reminder

During the summer the club has been booked for several evenings for private parties. A list of dates is posted on the notice board in the bar. These events bring in much needed revenue for the club and are to be encouraged. I would ask that members appreciate the efforts being made to ensure the future financial status of the club and apologise for any inconvenience caused by these events.

Cancelled: Ladies Day - Royal Ascot - 17 June

Unfortunately this event has now been cancelled.

PLAYING GOLF AT ANDOVER GOLF CLUB

We are a small, friendly Club and are keen to welcome all members to play golf in the way that suits them best.  Over the next few weeks, we will be explaining how each section of the Club works; this week we are starting with the Men’s section:

Roll ups - they are most evenings in the week around 5/5.30.   Just turn up and play with whoever has done the same. If there are a fair few, we might put £2 in a mug for the winner of the day (normally 10 holes).  They are very informal and provide the opportunity for a quick beer afterwards.

If there is no Club match, Roll ups also happen on Saturday mornings about 11am and some Sundays (18 holes).  Alex the Pro or Jake Ross would know a day or so before if there is a roll up on.

Club Competitions and Club matches - there are notice boards in your changing room; please read regularly and put your name up for the competitions and matches you would like to play. Then a week or so later the teams and start times go up.

Any questions or general help call Mark Gates (Club Captain) 07860 669434.

Reminder of the Revised Dress Code

Club house:

The dress code for the club house area has been relaxed over the last 12 months, including one or two details in last week’s Newsletter; this has been done to encourage use of the bar by more members, social members and visitors, which is vital to the survival of the Golf Club, as it is creating the revenue required to keep the Club going.

The dress code for the bar is now as follows:

  • you can wear denim
  • you can wear crew neck t-shirts
  • you can wear trainers

all of which, need to be in good order.

During the World Cup you can wear football shirts in the Clubhouse.

Many committee members are working very hard to complete the refurbishment of the bar area - there is no point if it is not used.

Golf Course

The dress code here remains unchanged; in the very near future, we will be addressing the issue of men being able to wear golf shirts untucked

Thank you!
I would also like to take the opportunity, personally and on behalf of the members, to thank all committee members and volunteers for their continued hard work and commitment to the future success of Andover Golf Club; without these people we would no longer be able to play golf at this Club.  A big well done and thanks to you all, we are moving in the right direction and creating a better more positive atmosphere around the Club.

·         Bev Blake and Paul Bachelor for the help on the course last week.  As you will see, some of the tees are being rested in preparation for Captains Weekend.

Stoneham
The results are - we lost 6-1 away at Southampton.  Unfortunately we only went with 6 players so were conceding 1 game from the start; Sue Davis was our only winner.

Our next match will be away to Freshwater Bay on Sunday 6th June.

The Mixed away match for Burley, Sunday 20th June, is on the main notice board.  Would people please put up their names.

This week’s match was against Bishopswood and we lost 4-2; the only pair to win was Roger Crook and Des Pearce, with the pairings of Mervyn Perry/Brian Collis and Tony Marks/Clive Broughton getting draws.

Running total of full playing adults including life members to date is: 256.

Full paying Members who have joined since 1 Dec 2009 is: 58.

AGC MONTHLY BOARD MEETING – Mon 25 May 10

The minutes including a breakdown of the accounts to date, will shortly be available in the Secretary’s office.

The President, Bryon Tarrant was in attendance too. He will shortly be returning to hospital for another operation. We wish him all the best.

AGC DIARY – 2011

The current Club Captains will soon be compiling the draft fixtures list for 2011 which will then be included in next year’s diary. Should you consider you have a valid input then please contact the relevant Captain, failing that the Club Secretary.

IMPROVEMENTS TO CLUB HOUSE – LATEST UPDATE

  1. The carpet is being delivered next Tuesday and should be fitted the following week.
  2. The external façade has been agreed with the design team from Powells with discussions on the internal designs are ongoing.  It is hoped that the fitting will be prior to the Captain’s weekend on the 12th but definitely by the 19th Presentation weekend.
  3. The old trophy cabinet top level is being removed next Tuesday/Wednesday,
  4. The new coffee machine has been ordered; it will be sited next to the competitions computer.  The reason for this is that the area from the old trophy cabinet across the room is going to be a stud bar area, so the competitions computer, new bar section and coffee machine can be accessed without removing golf shoes.
  5. The ceiling is 90% complete and should be completed over the next 2 weeks.
  6. The lighting system has been reconfigured so it works better at functions.
  7. The foyer area has been painted.
  8. The clubhouse sound system is being worked on.

Thanks go to all those who have and are helping with these improvements.

GREENS

Extensive work is being carried out on the greens over the next week prior to the Captain’s Weekend – details are on the Notice Board in the Foyer.

A thank you to Les Britten for his continued voluntary work to maintain the flower beds around the Club House. Yesterday was spent planting marigolds and cosmos besides clearing all of the dead daffodils.

Trespassing on the Course – A Timely Reminder

Over the past couple of weeks we have experienced visitors to the Club and of all ages trespassing on the Course. To do so is foolhardy and certainly dangerous. In due course a simple barrier will be erected adjacent to the Club house. Accordingly we ask you inform guests to the Club of this potential danger– thank you.

CLUB CAPTAIN

A Note of Thanks from the Captain

Massive thanks to my old mate Giddy Wells who owns Powells Ltd. I asked him a month or so ago to see if he could get AGC a good trade deal on some ceiling tiles for our bar area. Well he did! They were totally FOC so if you see him about give him a pat on the back and a thank you, or even buy him a pint? (It saved us £600 or more).  He has also given us a fab quote on the fitted cupboards and trophy cabinet to be fitted shortly

A  Well done is also due to Neil Petal, Ray Bradbury, Alex Whitburn and Warren (who from what I hear supervised!) for putting all the tiles up. Is there no end to Alex's talents? He is our Pro our Bar manager our Chef and now our Tiler! What a star that man is!!

Dicky White captained our club match victory away to Bishopswood three and a half to one and a half on Saturday 15th may (Dicky also painted the foyer and rewired the bar light this week!

Neil Patel captained our home club match victory 3.2 against our local rivals "The Hampshire". (It still baffles me how they got away with that name) on Saturday 22nd May.

Many thanks and well done to both Dicky and Neil for sorting the teams for me while I was on holiday.  I am sure I owe you both a beer or 2!

10th/18th Tee – Wayward Tee Shots – Positive Feedback!

The Resident, whose garden had been receiving wayward golf balls from the 10th/18th Tee, has informed the Secretary that since the change to the course no golf balls have fallen into his garden.

Full paying Members who have joined since 1 Dec 2009 is 56.

Change of Match time

Improvements to Clubhouse - Update

  1. The carpet is being delivered next Tuesday and should be fitted the following week.
  2. The external façade has been agreed with the design team from Powells;  discussions on the internal designs are ongoing.

Results:

Ogbourne Down
The first match was on the Monday when we were away to Ogbourne.  For those who have not played there it is a really nice but testing course.  Unfortunately we only had 10 players and we lost 3 to 2. JRH and Arthur Dearden won with Arthur getting a birdie 2 at the 17 to clinch the win.  Mervyn Perry and Brian Colliss also won.  The food was superb and overall it was an excellent day out.

Dummer
On the Wednesday, we were at home to Dummer and won 4.5 to 1.5.  The pairings of JRH/Tony Marks, Roger Crook/Graham Stallard, Adrian Boulton/Des Pearce, and John Hague/Arthur Dearden all won, with Mervyn Perry and Brian Chapman getting a half.  It was good to see Adrian getting back to winning ways after a spell in the desert.  Thanks once again to Graham Stallard and Arthur Dearden for standing in at the last minute.

Wednesday 5 May

We had a friendly match against AGC Ladies.  The match was played in a friendly but competitive manner and thanks to Ruby Cairns, the result finished at 3 all.
We all then sat down to an excellent meal prepared by Paul and it was good to see Gill Frendo even though she will not be playing for some weeks.

Forthcoming Matches:

The next match is away against the DLO on Wednesday 19th May and the availability sheet is now on the notice board.

Seniors Open
The competition will take place on the 23rd June. Availability sheets are on the notice board in both the Ladies and Mens changing rooms, so please put your names down if you are interested in playing.  The competition is open to Ladies and Gents who are over 55, and will be based upon a full handicap Stableford.
There will be lots of prizes and a buffet meal after wards.  This is going to be a fun day so please join in.

GREENS

Chris was pleased to receive a number of compliments for the condition of the Course. The greens are a little slow to recover owing to the weather but they are progressing well. Thanks to Peter Scott and Ken Brown for their hover mowing and green’s cut.

Please note that Chris will be off for a few days from 17 May so he would appreciate a little extra help to cover his absence.

CHAIRMAN OF HOUSE COMMITTEE

Quiz Night – Friday, 30 April

A big thank you to those who attended the quiz last night, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

As quizmaster it’s always a bit daunting facing an audience for the first time, and following John Rogers was always going to be difficult but with his help and guidance I got through it. Thanks also go to Steve Head and Sharon who organised the Fish & Chip meal, all on time, all hot and very enjoyable.  Winners were “Fivers”  by just one point, a close fought contest.  The Captain’s charity has benefitted from the kind donations from all winning teams, and the carpet fitting fund has been swollen with the proceeds of Heads & Tails.

It was disappointing that some who put their names down to attend did not come, food was ordered for these and unfortunately wasted, a loss of profit for the club.

A great night nevertheless.

Poker: 23rd April.

The most successful poker night so far – extremely well attended.  Watch the Newsletter for the date of the next one.

Greene King Promotion.

Are you participating in the ‘Grab a Gallon’ promotion which commenced last month?  Buy a pint of IPA, and receive a raffle ticket.  The weekly competition will take place every Friday at 1700hrs in the Bar.  The name of the Winners will be published on the posters in the bar.  Bar staff will administer the winning pints!

CLUB CAPTAIN

The club was beaten 5.0 away to Blackmore GC on Saturday in the Kindred Clubs foursomes knockout comp (we won’t mention the individual results as they are a tad embarrassing!).  I think all our players had one eye on Warren’s party that we all rushed back for!!!

On a better note, we won our club match away to Southwood GC 3.2 on a real hot sunny day.

Just a note to say how good it was to see Bryon Tarrant at the club on both the Saturday and Sunday of the President’s weekend.  And big thanks to all who entered (100 plus!) as Bryon was very happy with the turn out.

Don’t forget Winter rules are now over!!

LADIES CAPTAIN

Pink Lady Day was a resounding success with 29 ladies visiting Andover Golf club for what turned out to be a glorious day of lovely sunshine and fantastic golf.

There were prizes for Nearest the pin on the 6, Longest drive on the 18 and a main prize for the overall winner. There was a putting competition for all, golf participants and helpers alike. In the club house we had various stalls, Tom-bola, cake stall, raffle; these were contributions provided by club members, so very many thanks to all.   Alex with First Cut Golf provided several rails of ladies golf wear.

The Andover Advertiser was also in attendance, so don’t forget to buy your copy this weekend. The overall takings have not yet been calculated; I will post the final takings at a later date.

The Ladies played a match at Tylney Park on Tuesday with our first friendly win of the season, well played to all the team.

Wed 5th May is the Seniors v Ladies match; we currently have 11 lady players, ideally we would like 12 to even the teams out, therefore if any of you ladies can play please let me or one of the committee know.   Our new barman, Paul, has a catering background and has offered to provide the meal for this event.

A String Fun day was a great success!  12 members attended and everyone enjoyed the golf and the food – Fred Brender made everyone’s day when he produced some fantastic profiteroles with a gorgeous chocolate sauce!

Saturday 10 April was the start of the seasons mixed matches, with a trip to Alton, it was a beautiful sunny afternoon that saw Andover half the match 3 - 3, the Andover participants were Mark Gates and Gill Frendo, Paul Morran and Sue Davis, Roy and Lesley Compton, Jon and Sharon Leckie, Paul Fields and Pat Goss. Thanks to all of you for playing.

Sunday 11 April Saw the ladies sections first Stoneham Cup match, this was against Hockley, the current holders and it was a fantastic victory to Andover 5 matches to 2, a massive well done and thanks to Nicky Rusher, Mandie Scott, Angela Rogers, Gill Frendo, Lesley Compton, Ann Dearden and Meg Leach.

Thursday 15 April was the first of the ladies friendly matches, with a trip to Bishopswood. With only six players available, myself and Liz Eames played on their own against two BW ladies, the other players were Sharon Leckie and Becky Tarrant, Lesley Compton and Anne Allen, this was Anne’s first match participation for Andover and she certainly looked as if she enjoyed the BW hospitality. The match result was a win for BW 3 matches to 1.

PINK LADY DAY 22 April Less than I week to go, so there is still plenty of time for all club members, ladies and Gentlemen, to buy that last minuet raffle Prize, Tom-bola item, or if you are just good at baking, then show us how good you are by baking a cake for the cake stall.  All contributions can be passed to a lady committee member, or just left behind the bar. Many thanks in anticipation, the ladies committee.

SUNDAY 18 APRIL

SENIORS CAPTAIN

This weeks match was away against Test Valley which we unfortunately lost 4-2, John Hague losing his unbeaten run.  Roger Crook and Des Pearce were one of the winning pairs along with the pairing of Brian Chapman and myself, many thanks to Brian for turning out with a really bad cold.  It was nice to see two new faces for this match with Tom Sturgess and Les Taylor joining us for the first time this year. Hopefully they enjoyed the day.

The next matches are away to Ogbourne on Monday 26th April followed by Dummer at home on Wednesday 28th April.   We still need volunteers for both of these games.

Another reminder that the monthly stableford is on Wednesday 21st April.

The winter eclectic is drawing to a close so please try to play your final rounds.

Existing members will also be glad to know that we have managed to keep membership renewals at last years price of £399.  Yes that's just a little over £1 per day, again very good value for money.

What can you buy for £1 per day these days ? Quite a lot if you come to Andover Golf Club.
